Our Research
We are the Prostate Cancer Research team based at St. George’s, University of London.
Our research focuses on the investigation of cell molecular pathways involved in prostate cancer development; we are aiming to identify changes in the prostate cells that allow us to detect prostate cancer at early stages and help inform disease prognosis. We are also specialised in the functional characterisation of novel genes and genetic variants associated with prostate cancer risk.
We work with 3D cell cultures such as spheroids and organoids alone or co-cultured with other cell types like immune cells. We also apply other cutting-edge technologies such as CRISPR/Cas9 for gene editing, liquid biopsies for the detection of cancer biomarkers and high-end microscopy like confocal microscopy for the visualisation of cell structural and functional changes.
The team is led by Dr Ferran Valderrama and Dr Clara Cieza-Borrella, both lecturers at St George’s, University of London who are also actively involved in delivering research-informed teaching and undergraduate and postgraduate research projects supervision. We also organise and participate in public engagement activities like the Science Museum Lates.
We have well established worldwide collaborations and an industrial partnership with NeoPhore.
